I'm already a passionate community leader doing worthwhile community work. I'd like to extend my reach as your Wahroonga Ward Councillor. I intend to collaborate with other Councillors to:
Ku-ring-gai, the 'Green Heart,' is losing tree canopy rapidly due to land clearing, misuse of the 10/50 rule, overdevelopment, and ignorance of our ecosystem's value. We live in six endangered ecological communities, including two critically endangered ones. I am committed to conserving our environment for current and future residents.
Community land should be for everyone, not just special interest groups. I advocate for natural turf on community ovals, as synthetic grass creates a harmful heat island effect. While many places ban synthetic fields, Ku-ring-gai Council is building one in West Pymble using plastic equivalent to 4.39 million single-use bags, which is not recyclable. Voting for me will help protect community land from appropriation, rezoning, overdevelopment, and sell-offs.
The consultation process at Ku-ring-gai Council is flawed. Residents often face pseudo-consultations with decisions already made. Recently, 72% of supposed support for a project came from non-residents, while a petition from 1,700 locals was ignored. If elected, I will ensure a fair, transparent consultation process.
We trust the Council to spend our rates responsibly, but how do we know? Ku-ring-gai Council’s 2023 Income Statement shows $168 million in revenue and $143 million in spending. Despite this, there are efforts to sell community land to balance the budget. If elected, I will push for an independent review of expenditures to ensure ratepayers get value for money.
I will support the Council in delivering efficient local infrastructure and services, including planning approvals, roads, parking, footpaths, transport, waste collection, recycling, stormwater management, public amenities, and sports and recreation facilities. As a lover of the arts, I will also advocate for arts and cultural community events.
I've been to many wonderful events hosted by Ku-ring-gai Council. Their Library events are incredible! Last year I took a five minute drive to meet my favourite author Kate Grenville and hear her talk about her latest novel at Gordon Library. As a published poet myself, I was part of an event for local writers where I read one of my favourite poems from The Unfolding called 'I gave you everything you wanted' - a poem from Mother Earth. Ku-ring-gai Council provides so many opportunities for members of our community to be touched by arts and culture. I'd like to give them my support and gratitude for the wonderful work they do. I'd like to see Marion Street Theatre be restored to its former glory. Who are we without an arts precinct?
